Day 1– Arrive in Denver, Colorado, by 12:30 pm. Enjoy a city and foothills tour including the State Capital, Historic Districts and Buffalo Bill Gravesite area. Evening on your own in Historic Golden. Overnight Golden CO
Day 2 – breakfast – This morning we will visit the Colorado Railroad Museum for a great introduction to Colorado railroading. They have a comprehensive collection of memorabilia and rolling stock, including a working Galloping Goose! After lunch on your own, we head into the Foothills of the Rockies to ride the engineering marvel that is the Georgetown Loop Railroad over the amazing “Devil’s Gate”. Rounding out the day is a visit to the active Phoenix Mine. Enjoy Golden this evening.
Day 3 – breakfast – South to Colorado Springs and a ride to the top of Pike’s Peak on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. We top out at over 14,000 feet where the donuts are very special and the views are inspiring-so much so that they inspired America the Beautiful! We’ll drive through the red rock formations of Garden of the Gods before continuing to The Royal Gorge Railroad deep within the Royal Gorge. We overnight in Canon City.
Day 4 – breakfast – The Arkansas River leads the way into the Rocky Mountains and over the Continental Divide to the San Luis Valley-a remarkable geographic wonderland. This is where there are lots of underground aquafers both hot and cold as well as !4,000 foot peaks and the largest sand dune in N. America, Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. Adjacent to the Dunes is the Nature Conservancies reserve called Ranchland. We will be treated to a special wagon ride into the historic Zapata/Medano Ranch to find some of their 2000 head of Bison. Overnight in Alamosa.
Day 5 – breakfast, lunch – We spend much of our day riding the iconic Cumbres & Toltec Railroad out of the Valley and over the mountains. We stop midway at Osier Pass for an included lunch before continuing into New Mexico and the railroad town of Chama. The scenery will be filled with evergreens, aspen and wildflowers. Keep an eye out for pronghorn, deer and elk as we ride along. Our bus meets us to continue to Durango CO for the night. Enjoy downtown this evening.
Day 6 – breakfast – You might want to visit the Railroad Museum only a block from our hotel before we board one of the most famous narrow gauge railroads in the world-the Durango Silverton! This route, as it follows the Animas River Canyon, was also once part of the Denver and Rio Grande Western and is an engineering marvel! The section named “the High Line” is one of the most photographed places in Colorado. When we arrive in Silverton, we have time to explore and shop and eat in this historic mining town where Bat Masterson was once called in too tame the town. Keep the cameras handy as our bus navigates the fantastic Million Dollar Highway to the Switzerland of America, Ouray. Here we board jeeps for a four wheel excursion in to the mining district. A short drive brings us to our overnight in Ridgeway.
Day 7 – breakfast, pool pass –We can cross the road to visit the Ridgeway Railroad Museum before we journey through more beautiful Colorado scenery to Glenwood Springs and the world’s largest outdoor hot springs pool. You can choose from optional spa treatments, the therapy pool or the big pool to relax from our travels. Our hotel is across the street and many restaurants nearby.
Day 8 – breakfast, dinner – After breakfast you could opt for another quick dip in the pool before we board the Amtrak California Zephyr for the most scenic ride anywhere on the Amtrak route in America- between Glenwood and Denver. No worries when we get to the depot, our bags will already be in our rooms at the 4 star Crawford Hotel right inside the restored Union Pacific Depot in the historic LoDo district of downtown Denver. We will get together one last time tonight to reminisce.
Day 9 – breakfast – This morning you will have room service deliver your breakfast. Then continuing our railroad theme you will take the Train to the Plane from the depot for your flights. You head to your home with memories and new friends of your…Journey West.
